Fake Bills Fool Counterfeit Detection Pens

A counterfeiter’s chemical treatment of $100 banknotes circulating in the US Virgin Islands has tricked the pens used by many businesses to check the authenticity of banknotes, authorities said. In a statement relased on June 28th, the Police Department has said that the banknotes have been accepted by numerous establishments despite a number of inconsistencies, because they passed the counterfeit pen's test. Detectives believe the fake bills have been treated with a chemical that inhibits the counterfeit-detector pens from working, police said. The pens usually detect bills that are printed on normal copier paper instead of the material used for authentic bills. The chemical used on the fake bills even causes the mark made by the pens to disappear after a span, leaving no trace that the bill was ever checked for authenticity, police said. Police advised businesses and customers to be aware of the counterfeit bills and to check for some of the visible signs of a counterfeit banknote. Do not rely completely on the counterfeit pens, they said.<< Back to blog list
